WE LOVE TO talk about the advantages of being near a city like Washington,DC: culture, concerts, food, entertainment, theater, art, history, and the list goes on and on. Tonight a group of students in an honors Civil War course will spend the evening with Dr. James McPherson, America's preeminent Civil War historian. That reminds us of another advantage: all the biggest and best authors swing through DC on their book tours.

McPherson, a professor at Princeton University, is making an appearance at Politics & Prose, one of DC's great bookstores. He will be discussing he newest book, The Mighty Scourge, which is a collection of essays on the Civil War, including essays on General Robert E. Lee’s goals in the Gettysburg campaign, Lincoln and Grant in the Vicksburg campaign, and Lincoln as commander in chief.

If you are in the area and would like to join the class, contact professor Bradford Haas at bhass@cuc.edu. Vehicles will leave the CUC parking lot at 6:00pm.

UNLESS YOU READ the business section of the paper in your hometown, you may have missed this story from the Bloomberg news service:

The House of Representatives approved legislation that would base the amount of aid low-income college students receive as federal grants on their overall educational costs rather than just tuition.
What does this mean for the average incoming college student? Well, in a nutshell it means that you will have more financial aid coming your way if you qualify for the funds. Everyone knows that tuition isn't the only expense that college students have to incur (what about living expenses, food, books, etc?). Now the House of Representatives seem to know that too.

Too get a more detailed explanation of the entire financial aid process, contact our financial aid office at 800-835-4212.

'48-Hour Film Project' Back This Weekend

IT HAS BECOME an annual tradition. Each President's Day weekend, aspiring film-makers come together on the campus of Columbia Union College for the '48-hour Film Project.' The project was created by members of CUC's Communications and Journalism Department and is now sponsored by the Media Studies Department. Each February, students from around the country are invited to Columbia Union College to compete in this unique event.

Student teams are given the equipment necessary to create a short film and are given 48 hours to complete the project -- that includes writing, acting, directing, filming, and editing the entire short film. Oh yeah, and each year you have to incorporate one prop into your film, and you find out which prop when the project starts. This year's project will begin on February 17, at 7:00pm and will conclude...well...48 hours later. For more information on how you can be involved this year contact Barry Casey, Chair of the Department of Communicatiosn and Journalism, at bcasey@cuc.edu. You can also call CUC toll free at 800-835-4212.

Check back next week as we will try to post the winning film on this blog.

Shakespeare in Washington

FOR THOSE OF you who are Shakespeare buffs (come on, we know some of you are out there), you might be interested in a 7-month festival here in Washington that is dedicated to all-things-bard. The Shakespeare in Washington festival is sponsored by the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts and runs from January - July 2007.

Throughout the seven months, more than 100 works will be performed by over 60 arts organizations. The event official kicked-off with a performance of A Twelfth Night on Twelfth Night (a reference to the play being performed on January 6, the twelfth day of Christmas). To give you some idea of how big this festival is, just take a look at what you could see today:

  • The Tempest at the Keegan Theatre
  • King Lear at the Folger Theatre
  • Macbeth at the Synetic Theatre
  • Twelfth Night at the Kennedy Center
  • I Hate Shakespeare at American University
  • Rough Magic at the Rorschach Theatre
  • Shakespeare in Love at the University of Maryland (part of a film series)
  • Shakespeare Monologue Competition (students in grade 6-9) at University of Maryland
  • As You Like It -- an art exhibit sponsored by the Capitol Hill Arts League

And that's just one day! Imagine all this for seven months. Of course, this only illustrates again the advantages of being in a city like Washington. This kind of opportunity doesn't come to just any college town!

For more information about the Shakespeare in Washington Festival, visit their official website, and be sure to stay tuned for more information about a very special Shakespeare in Washington Conference that will be held on the campus of Columbia Union College.

Snow and Ice Closes CUC

THE SNOW AND ice storm that is hitting the northern part of the country has resulted in the cancellation of classes at CUC. Offices closed on Tuesday afternoon at 2:00pm and remained closed for all of Wednesday.

Since temps aren't expected to get much above freezing today (and they'll get down to the teens tonight), there's still no word on tomorrows schedule. Check
the main website for more details.

Choral Festival: the 'Wow' Factor

THE 2007 COLUMBIA Union College Choral Festival was held on February 7-10 at CUC's main campus just outside Washington, DC and the reaction of those who participated has been very positive.

'Wow!' was the word used by Lindsey, a high-school senior who attended the 4-day festival. 'I've never sung in a choir that produced that much sound,' she added. 'I think it helped to have the orchestra playing with us. All I can say is Wow!'

Festival members rehearsed for more than 12 hours with Dr. James Bingham, Chair of the CUC music department and director of the Columbia Collegiate Chorale and the CUC Pro Musica. In some brief remarks during Friday evening's concert at Spencerville Church, Dr. Bingham praised the festival participants, saying they were 'among the best he has ever had' in his 30 years of directing choral festivals. In addition to the Friday vespers concert, the chorus also provided the music for church services at Sligo Church on Sabbath.

Although the rehearsals were long and the students put in a lot of hard work, there was some also some down time, particularly on Thursday afternoon when the entire festival choir went to downtown Washington for a private tour of the National Cathedral and dinner at famous Union Station.

'The Cathedral was amazing,' remarked one participant. 'I'd do anything to be able to perform there.'

A High of 24?

THAT'S RIGHT, THE entire Northeast is in the grips of a bit of a cold spell, and the CUC campus is right in the middle of it. Temperatures today will only climb to the mid-20's in the Washington, DC area. Scroll down to the right to see the current temps. Students are doing their best to keep warm as they walk between classes.

So much for the mild winter we wrote about in this space a few weeks ago!
