Mock Trial Team Wins Again

THE COLUMBIA UNION College Mock Trial team defeated the University of Dayton, Sunday, January 29 in a three-hour mock trial competition. CUC has now won four out of five annual competitions with the University of Dayton.

Fifty students, parents, and teachers from Spring Valley Academy and area churches witnessed the competition, which took place in the Montgomery County Common Pleas Courthouse in downtown Dayton, Ohio. The two scoring judges, both magistrates in the Dayton area, scored CUC as the winner. CUC students also received the most points for outstanding witness. Andrew Ritland, a senior, political studies and history major, received the most points, followed by Tyson Shaw, a junior political studies and religion major. Tyson is from nearby Columbus, OH and his parents witnessed the competition.

The members of this year's mock trial team are all political studies majors with a pre-law emphasis. In addition to Andrew and Tyson, the other members are Ellie Barker (sophomore), Jasmine Johnson (senior), Andrew MacKay (junior) and Estevanny Jimenez (senior). The team is coached by Steven Brennwald, head of a law office in Washington, DC, and Joseph Wright, Assitant State's Attorney in Prince George's County, Maryland.

CUC is the only Adventist College with a mock trial team and this year CUC has 60 pre-law students, the largest number in any Adventist college. You can find more information at www.cuc.edu or at the CUC Center for Law & Public Policy. ONE OF THE coolest events held each year at CUC is the 48-Hour Film Project, sponsored by the Department of Communications & Journalism. Each February, students from around the country are invited to Columbia Union College to compete in this unique event. Student teams are given the equipment necessary to create a short film and are given 48 hours to complete the project -- that includes writing, acting, directing, filming, and editing the entire short film. This year's Project will begin on February 18, 2006 at 7:00pm and will conclude...well...48 hours later. For more information on how you can be involved this year contact Barry Casey, Chair of the Department of Communicatiosn and Journalism, at bcasey@cuc.edu. IF YOU DON'T know what it's like to perform at the world famous Carnegie Hall in New York City, you haven't been a part of the music department at Columbia Union College. Each year, the orchestra and choir at CUC perform up to 20 concerts at the famed venue. This year alone our orchestra, the New England Youth Ensembe is scheduled to perform there 26 times. Try doing that at any other college in the country!

There's simply nothing like it. Carnegie Hall has seen the likes of Ray Charles, Louis Armstrong, Sting, Luciano Pavarotti, and Yo-Yo Ma, just to name a few. It is the most famous concert hall in the United States and YOU could play there if you come to CUC! Find out more by contacting the music department at neye@cuc.edu, or log on to CUC's website at www.cuc.edu. You can also take a virtual tour around Carnegie Hall at their website www.carnegiehall.org. Take a look at the stage and imagine yourself there!
