VANESSA JORGENSEN, A student at Columbia Union College is featured in several photographs on the
Yahoo! Olympics page. Vanessa is sophomore at CUC who is currently spending a year abroad at the
Instituo Awentista Villa Aurora, an Adventist college in Florence, Italy. Columbia Union College has affiliations with several overseas schools and each year a number of students take the opportunity to spend a year studying abroad. In addition to the Villa Aurora, recent CUC students have spend a year studying in France, Spain, Austria, and Argentina -- just to name a few. For much more information about studying abroad while studying at CUC, email us at

IT HAS BEEN a warmer-than-average winter in Washington, DC, with spring-like temperatures and not even a trace of snow since early December. That all changed this weekend as more than a foot of snow fell in the Maryland suburbs. Some areas near the
CUC campus saw over 20 inches.
And as you can see from the picture at the left, a few people used the occasion to build a snowman in front of the US Capitol Building.
For many CUC students the snow was a welcome sight. After all, we kind of like the fact that we get all four seasons in this part of the country. The only down side to the storm was that it came on the weekend and students didn't get a snow day. CUC opened on time Monday morning and classes ran as usual all day.
You can't have it all!

THE COLUMBIA UNION College Acro-Airs team may be coming to a gymnasium near you. The team will be heading to
Blue Mountain Academy this weekend (Feb 10-11) where they will lead out in worship services, hold clinics, and entertain the campus with a high-flying performance on Saturday night. In early March, the Acro-Airs will head to Ohio to perform at
Mt. Vernon Academy and
Spring Valley Academy. If you happen to live near any of these schools, you're invited to come out and watch. Email the team at
acroairs@cuc.edu to get the complete schedule.
The CUC Acro-Air team is the largest athletic group on our campus with nearly
50 members and it provides students with the opportunity to perform all around the country. The team also performs regularly at NBA half-time shows in Washington, Philadelphia, New Jersey, and at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
You can get a lot more information about how you can be a part of the team (and how you can earn scholarships for college) by contacting Acro-Airs coach Ben Johnson at

THE COLUMBIA UNION College Mock Trial team was narrowly defeated by the University of Redlends on Sunday, February 5. The competition was held in Riverside, CA at the historic City Courthouse. CUC lost in the overall category by only four points, but two CUC students, Tyson Shaw and Andrew Ritland, were singled out as the best witnesses in the competition. This marks the second consecutive time that Shaw and Ritland have won the award for best witness.
The mock trial team members flew to California on Thursday, February 2 and spend most of Friday speaking with area high school students about the pre-law program at Columbia Union College. CUC has more declared
pre-law students than any other Adventist college in North America. Over 50 people witnessed the competition on Sunday. If you were there -- or if our team visited your school -- send us a note and tell us your thoughts.
CUC has now competed in two mock trial competitions and has a record of one win and one loss. CUC
beat the University of Dayton on January 29. Two more competitions are scheduled: one against the University of Central Florida, and one against the University of Maryland. Stay tuned for more information about those events.
Columbia Union College is the only Adventist college with a mock trial team. For more
information, contact Dr. Roy Branson at
rbranson@cuc.edu, or visit
the mock trial section of our website. For more information about careers in law and public policy, visit the

THE CALENDAR MAY say that spring doesn't begin for another two months, but for the 18 members of the Columbia Union College baseball team, spring begins this
Friday, February 10, when they play their first game of the season against at Nyack College at 12:00pm. The double-header will be played at CUC's home field,
Shirley Povich Field in Bethesda, MD. First year coach Mike Ricucci is excited about this year's team. 'We have a lot of new players who come from all over the country. But what is so exciting is that they are basball guys -- guys who are real college players in terms of talent.' This year there are 13 new students at CUC who have come to specifically to play baseball at a Christian school that competes at the
NCAA Division-II level.
To catch a game check out the
full season schedule. If you like what you see you can get more information about the CUC baseball team by sending an email to
baseball@cuc.edu.
Columbia Union College is the only Adventist college to complete in NCAA Division-II athletics. CUC competes basketball, soccer, baseball, softball, track, and cross-country. For more information visit the

ANGELA STEVENS, A former student at Columbia Union College was oh so close to becoming the official voice of Metro, the name given to the Washington, DC subway system. Angela (that's her at the bottom left of the photo) was among ten finalists chosen by Metro officials from among more than 1200 official entries. The new voice of Metro will be used to record the 'doors closing' message that play each time a train is about the leave the station at the nation's second-busiest subway system. The job pays nothing, but hundreds of thousands of commuters, residents, and tourists will hear the voice each year. Metro says the message is played 33,017 times a day, seven days a week.
Angela currently works as a traffic reporter for
1500AM (WTOP), the largest news radio station in the Washington, DC area. Listen to Angela's audition tape -- as well as the tapes of the other finalists, at
The Washington Post's website.
