Happy Holidays!

The holidays mean a lot of different things to people. As soon as Thanksgiving is over and Black Friday shopping is finished, most people in the United States start to gear up for Christmas. Trees, lights, outdoor decorations, shopping...it's all part of the new commercialized "holiday package" that this little section of the world seems to enjoy.

All of those things are undeniably fun, but it's easy to forget the cliched "real reason" we celebrate Christmas. And, like I said, although the sentiment is cliched, the tone of what the holidays should be about can't really be pushed to the side.

You can open all your presents on Christmas day, admire the hundreds of dollars spent to make you happy for one morning...but as soon as you step into church after Christmas and hear your pastor or preacher speak about the first Christmas, that little twinge of guilt about your commercialized fun is pretty hard to ignore.

Even Wikipedia.org has this written first in the "Christmas" entry:

Christmas is an annual holiday that celebrates the birth of Jesus.

What better way to celebrate the birth of Jesus and combine some of the gift-giving that is now customary around the holidays than by giving friends and family a Global Giving Gift Certificate?

You can use your certificate to donate directly to over 400 screened international relief groups in these different categories: Aids Epidemic, Climate Change, Democracy & Governance, Economic Development, Education, Evironment, Gender & Equality, Health, Human Rights, Technology, Sustainable Agriculture, and Water Health.

Instead of focusing on yourself this Christmas, why not remember the real reason we celebrate in the first place...and help bring happiness to someone else's life at the same time?

Recent CUC Grad Killed in Iraq

THIS REPRINTED FROM from an annoucement sent out by the CUC Marketing and Communications Office:

Jonathan Cadavero, a 2004 graduate of Columbia Union College, died earlier this week while serving as a medic in Iraq. He was killed by a roadside bomb while traveling with a convoy. He was 24. He is survived by his mother Nadia, and his father, David, who serves as the superintendent of schools for the Greater New York Conference of Seventh-day Adventists.

After a military investigation, Jonathan will be flown to Germany, then to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware. The Cadavero family has not yet been informed of any specific dates. Jonathan will be laid to rest in the military cemetery in Goshen, New York, about a half hour from the Cadavero's home.

The Columbia Union College family shares the Cadavero family’s sorrow. Jonathan was a tremendous asset to CUC. He was a cum laude graduate, a member of the Phi Eta Sigma academic honor society, Psi Chi psychology honor society, a member of the Dean’s List every year, a favorite player on the basketball team, and a Who’s Who nominee. We all feel the depth of their grief and pray that God will encircle the family with His peace and love. Please keep them in your prayers. Columbia Union College will hold a special remembrance service after Spring Break.

Further details will be made available as they are known. Cadavero was recently featured in an
Army Times article about his group’s work in clearing IEDs (improvised explosive devices.

What is W.I.S.E.?

WHEN CUC STUDENTS hear that it's W.I.S.E. week, the new ones always get a perplexed look on their face. 'What in the world is W.I.S.E.?" they ask. It stands for Week In Spiritual Emphasis -- what most Adventist kids know as Week of Prayer. As always, the week was an opportunity to focus on something that can sometimes get neglected during college life -- our relationship with God.

Pastor Damien Johnson was the featured speaker this semester. You can read all about the week on our main website.
